What type of insurance do you need for an RV?
Your recreational vehicle (RV) is more than an automobile, however, it is not quite a house. RV insurance is different than both car and homeowner insurance. That is why motorhomes, travel trailers, and campers need custom coverage. As your personal agent, we can answer your question so you can make the best decision about your coverage choices.
Is RV Insurance Mandatory?
In Texas, you are required to carry bodily injury and property damage liability on your motorhome or any other motorized vehicle. If you are pulling a travel trailer liability could be transferred from your auto insurance policy while towing your camper. That being said, if you are not towing the travel trailer then you will have no liability coverage on your camper.
Travel trailers are not motorized, and insurance may be optional if choose to self-insure for your personal property and physical damage. If you are financing your travel trailer, the lender or bank will typically require you to carry physical damage coverages.
Do you need special insurance for an RV?
Motorhome insurance coverage may include liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured motorist, medical payments, towing and roadside assistance, and in some ways similar to your auto policy. RV insurance may have additional options available such as Total Loss Replacement, Agreed Value, Vacation liability, coverage for your personal effects, and contents inside your RV or motorhome.
Is your motorhome or travel trailer your full-time residence?
Britton Insurance offers policies that serve the unique needs of full-time RVers. If your RV is your primary home, you need to add the full-timers package to your policy. Full time is typically defined as residing in a motorhome or travel trailer more than six months out of the year; or as a primary home. Coverage depends on the type of policy you select and the option you customize. However, you could be covered against broader liabilities, injuries, and certain losses that occur around your RV. Important note: If you file a claim while using your RV as a permanent residence and you don’t have full-time RV insurance, your insurer may deny your claim.
Does RV Insurance Cover Roof Leaks?
Traditionally a roof leak would be part of the insurance plan if a covered peril first caused the roof to leak. For example, a tree branch snapped in a storm and fell resulting in a hole in the roof where water was then able to leak enter. This type of loss would fall under the deductible for comprehensive coverage of the policy and should pay to repair the roof leak since the wind and hailstorm were the root cause of the damage.
Some insurance companies offer new enhanced options that are less typical of older coverage plans such as; Roof Protection Plus and an endorsement or an option for Pest at an additional charge. Traditionally excluded on RV policies the insurance carriers realize there is a need and have offered a buy-in option for additional coverage.
